UniqueScraps Fiber Information (under construction)
Are UniqueScraps Scrapbooking Fibers Acid-free? Scrapbooking fibers are acid-free and safe for your memory albums. The only fibers which have tested acidic are raffia-type fibers and leather-type fibers (we do not carry either of these types for this reason). The colors should be permanent as well, even if exposed to bright, prolonged sunlight or if they become soaked ... you should have no problems with fading or with bleeding onto any elements of your scrapbook layouts. It is possible for some types (especially mohair) of natural fibers to "shed" tiny bits if they are handled very roughly, so keep this in mind when working with your scrapbooking fibers. Absolute purists recommend that if you are using one-of-a-kind, valuable, or irreplaceable photos, you should take the following precautions: 1. Use only copies of the photos, and store the originals in a safe place. 2. If you DO use the originals, allow only acid-free, lignin-free, buffered papers to come in direct contact with the photos. It is preferable to use photo corners or some other non-adhesive means to attach the photos, however, if you must use an adhesive, make sure that your adhesive is acid-free as well. The photos should be protected with a pvc-free, non-vinyl page protector. 3. It is important to consider the thickness and hardness of embellishments used and how they may affect your photos. Consider whether your photos are likely to be dented by impressions from embellishments, particularly metal or plastic ones. To minimize risk, always store your albums in an upright, rather than flat, position. Scrapbooking fibers are very soft, and should not generally pose denting problems, but use caution if you use the thickest fibers or use multiple strands or knot them. (Storing the album upright will prevent almost every case of even the slightest possible imprint damage from something as soft as fibers.)
